Abstract
JACMEL, Haiti Dr. Steven Johnson, a Christiana Care trauma surgeon, cried when he broke the news to his colleagues. Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known as Doctors Without Borders, an international organization that provides medical help at disaster sites, arrived Sunday to say it is taking control of St. Michel hospital and the Delaware team of doctors and nurses must leave the grounds. It didnt matter that Johnson, physicians assistant Scott Stevenson, nurse tech David Brayfield and ER tech Joshua Wallace worked 36 hours to set up the operating tent. It didnt matter that the Delaware team had two days of successful surgery, working with Haitians, Cubans and other American health teams. Medecins Sans Frontieres officials said Delawares all-volunteer medical team could not continue after the French medical team takes charge in the next day or two.
