Abstract
This paper describes the collective violence that took place in and around Los Angeles, California, in April and May, 1992. It summarizes available evidence about the events which precipitated the violence, the forms and extent of the looting, vandalizing, and arson as well as the attacks on persons, considers the ramifying human and economic consequences of the violence, and reviews the demographic, economic, and institutional circumstances surrounding the locus of the population of South-Central Los Angeles, where the major events occurred. Theories that best account for the rioting are summarized and sifted; chances for similar outbreaks in other cities are explored; and future policy options are examined.
