Abstract
In 1987. in Goiania, the capital of Gouis state. in Central Brazil. a ccsiurn-l I? radiotherapy unit was abandoned hy a private medical institute. Informal sector workers collected the unit. took it home. and opened it. The result was severe environmental and populational contamination. The medical responses given by state agencies mise a number of questions about ideological processes that shaped medical knowledge and about the construction of victim identity. This paper focuses on the human body as a representation of contradictions raised between institutional medical discourses and patient experiences in the context of a radiation disaster. I suggest that an understanding of those tensions and contradictions is important for an agenda that advocates human rights and health cure monitoring programs for affected populations.
