Abstract
A culture of political opposition fosters collective protest against the cuban state. Thsi paper identifies it and its contexts and conditions. Some of the more important origins of the culture are the institutional shadows and contradictions characterizing Cuban society, the work of religious believers, intellectuals and artists, and a cultural tradition of political criticism through humor. Some of its more immediate conditions are the paradoxical unintended unifying effect of the repressive activities of the state security systems, the effects of the Diaspora Cuban community on styles of political opposition, the chaos created by the generalized institutional implosion and the concomitant emergence of new institutions in the society, and the recent transformaiton of systems of mass communication which magnify collective awareness of opportunities for collective action. The collective actions produced by the culture of opposition, akin to a citizen surge, are manifold, including the activities of social movement organization, quasi social movement organizations, collective and mass behavior.
